Julio and Lisa Pagan Sculpt and Paint Real Surfboards to Create Exceptional Works of Art

How long have you been creating art, and more specifically, surf related art?
Julio worked for many years as a professional sculptor creating golf collectibles before starting his own company.  Lisa began painting in 1981 and has been a graphic artist in the imprinted sportswear industry for over 20 years.  In 2002 we combined our talents in painting and sculpture to create the PAGAN Surf Series.

How do you go about creating your unique style of art?
The three-dimensional quality of our work is it's most interesting feature and what sets it apart. Each one-of-a-kind piece in the PAGAN Surf Series is sculpted from an actual full-scale surfboard. The repurposed boards that we begin with each bring their own unique shape and personality to the work. The images are carved and built up on the surface of the surfboards to achieve a sculptural relief and are then painted in acrylic.

Do you have formal training or are you mostly self-taught?
Julio first studied art at the Catholic University, Puerto Rico.  His art education continued at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Southern California, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1991.  Lisa studied drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Southern California from 1981 to 1983.  She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Philadelphia Colleges of the Arts in 1987.

What inspires you to create new artwork?
We have always been lovers of the ocean and nature and are luck enough to live in a place that inspires us with its beauty every time we walk out the door.  The Surf Series immortalizes our experience as Californians.  The surfboards act as vehicles for exploring the world.  The boards'attractive forms inspire us and add an important ingredient to the public's visual experience.  We are attracted to the curvaceous, organic, yet dynamic form of surfboards.  The board itself symbolizes "good times", something that everyone responds to.   As an artistic team of sculptor and painter, each of us must respond to the other's vision.  This combination of "artistic genes" is helping the Surf Series continually evolve and remain interesting.

Do you have a favorite subject to portray in your work?
We have adopted one of the most adored symbols on the coasts of United States as the foundation for our works of art.  In the middle of the board, inside an oval, we create images of people, places and animals - exalting the drama, beauty and color of coastal living.  We create images that we enjoy - that are meaningful and interesting to us.  We also create custom boards for our clients.  If someone comes to us with their own concept for a board, we are happy to work with them to produce it.  Working with clients in this way sometimes pushes us in creative directions that we would not have explores on our own.
